🕊️ Do Spiritualists Believe in Reincarnation? A Medium’s Perspective by Rhys Wynn Davies

Reincarnation is one of humanity’s oldest and most fascinating spiritual ideas,

the belief that our souls return to the Earth plane again and again to learn, grow, and evolve. But how does this concept fit within the philosophy of Spiritualism?

As a Psychic Medium, Spirit Artist, and Author, I’m often asked this question during demonstrations, classes, and conversations with students:“Do Spiritualists believe in reincarnation?” It’s a question that sparks deep reflection, even among mediums and Spiritualists themselves, because while the idea of reincarnation is ancient, its place within Spiritualism is still open to personal interpretation.

The Foundations of Spiritualism

To understand how reincarnation fits into Spiritualism, it helps to start with the basics, the Seven Principles of Spiritualism. Originally inspired by the 19th-century medium Emma Hardinge Britten, the Seven Principles provide a moral and spiritual framework for the movement. They are:

  1. The Fatherhood of God

  2. The Brotherhood of Man

  3. The Communion of Spirits and the Ministry of Angels

  4. The Continuous Existence of the Human Soul

  5. Personal Responsibility

  6. Compensation and Retribution for all the good and evil deeds done on Earth

  7. Eternal Progress open to every human soul

Nowhere in these principles is reincarnation specifically mentioned.Instead, the emphasis is on continuous life, the belief that the soul survives physical death and continues to progress in the Spirit World. So, while reincarnation is not a core doctrine of Spiritualism, it’s also not dismissed. Spiritualism encourages exploration, personal experience, and open-mindedness, and that’s what makes this topic so rich and rewarding to explore.

🌌 A Spectrum of Beliefs Within Spiritualism

Over the years, I’ve met Spiritualists with a wide range of beliefs. Some fully embrace the idea of reincarnation, seeing it as a natural part of the soul’s evolution. Others remain open but uncertain, while some feel it doesn’t align with their understanding of the Spirit World.

Those who believe in reincarnation often describe it as the soul’s journey through multiple lives, returning to Earth to face new experiences, overcome challenges, and refine spiritual qualities like love, compassion, and wisdom.Their perspective often draws inspiration from traditions like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Theosophy, all of which speak of the soul’s cyclical journey through many incarnations. On the other hand, traditional Spiritualists might say that reincarnation isn’t necessary to explain personal growth. They believe the Spirit World itself offers infinite opportunities for learning and progression, without the need to return to a physical body.

🎨 The Medium’s Perspective

From a mediumship point of view, reincarnation raises fascinating questions.

As mediums, we regularly communicate with personalities in the Spirit World who still recognise themselves. They remember who they were, their families, their passions, their choices. Their identity remains clear and individual. If reincarnation meant that souls immediately “came back” into new bodies, how could we still be communicating with them?

Some mediums explain this apparent paradox by suggesting that part of the soul remains in Spirit, while another aspect incarnates, like multiple expressions of one greater consciousness.Others believe that reincarnation, if it occurs, may happen much later, once the soul has completed its learning in the Spirit World.

In my own experience, the individuality of Spirit is remarkably strong. The personalities who come through in readings are distinct and self-aware. That, to me, suggests that while reincarnation may exist, our spiritual essence continues to evolve in the Spirit World before, and perhaps beyond, any future earthly return.

🔍 Evidence and Experience

Scientific and spiritual researchers have long been intrigued by stories that suggest reincarnation might be real. Notably, Dr. Ian Stevenson and Dr. Jim Tucker at the University of Virginia have documented hundreds of cases of children who seem to remember past lives, recognising people, places, and events they couldn’t possibly have known. Spiritualists approach this type of evidence with both openness and discernment. After all, Spiritualism is based on evidence of survival, proof that consciousness continues after death. If reincarnation is indeed part of that greater truth, Spiritualists believe the evidence will eventually reveal itself through both scientific study and spirit communication.

💫 The Eternal Journey of the Soul

So, do Spiritualists believe in reincarnation? The most honest answer is: some do, and some don’t. Spiritualism encourages each of us to seek truth through personal experience, evidence, and spiritual understanding, not through blind belief.

Personally, I believe the soul’s journey is far too vast to be confined to one lifetime. I’ve seen how Spirit continues to evolve, teach, and love long after death.Perhaps reincarnation and spiritual continuity aren’t opposites, but two parts of the same infinite story, where the soul can grow both in Spirit and, when needed, back here on Earth.

🕯️ A Final Thought

In the end, questions like these remind us of one simple truth:We are eternal beings, continually learning, growing, and expressing love, whether in this world or the next. As mediums, seekers, and spiritual beings, our task is not just to know the answers but to live the questions, to explore, to listen, and to discover what resonates with our own soul’s truth. Thank you for reading, and for walking this path of spiritual curiosity with me.
